- Major Project - The 1912 Home
History
of the House
In
1912, Walter Johnson received 77 acres from his father, a Gwinnett
County farmer. With the help of his family and friends he built the
house and barn. The original house built on this site was a basic
four room with central hallway pyramidal family folk house. Typical
of the period, there was no decorative wood treatment of the eaves,
porches and windows. The design was basic and functional.
In the late 1920's a kitchen wing was added. The well was moved from
the front yard to its sheltered location on the porch. At various
times electric service, an indoor bathroom, gas space heaters and
public water were added to service the house.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnson sold their fields to the developers of Riverwood
Subdivision in the 1970s. They kept their beloved home until their
deaths in 1986.
The Walter Johnson homesite represents the lifestyle of the middle
class of Gwinnett County, Georgia in the first half of the 20th century.
Even with these renovations, the house and barn still capture that
time in history when the family farm was the southern lifestyle. |
